About the What Is My IP? tool

Every device that talks to the internet does so from a public IP address assigned by your ISP, mobile carrier, VPN or corporate network. This page shows the address our server sees when your browser connects, along with the details that travel with it.

Geolocation is approximate. It comes from the MaxMind GeoLite2 database, which maps IP ranges to the area where they are registered or routed, so it usually points to your provider's nearest hub rather than your street address.

The reverse DNS (PTR) name is looked up in the in-addr.arpa or ip6.arpa zone for your address. Providers often encode the region or connection type in it, and mail servers use it as one signal of legitimacy.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my IP address show a different city?

IP geolocation reflects where your provider registered or routes the address block. Mobile networks, VPNs and corporate gateways commonly appear in a different city or even country.

Why do I see an IPv6 address?

If your network and browser support IPv6, browsers prefer it. Your device may also have an IPv4 address that other sites see.

Can websites see my IP address?

Yes. Every site you visit receives your public IP address as part of the connection. A VPN or proxy replaces it with the provider's address.
